Om Namo Venkateshaya
It was a usual day at TTD Annamacharya Kala Mandiram in Tirupati where I was teaching young scholarship students Annamacharya Sankeerthanams, when a young lyricist approached me, introduced himself by his parentage and told me about his long desire to listen to his songs in my voice with my tunes. Never did I imagine that one day, I would compose music to over a 100 of his songs from his “SivaPadam” anthology.
25 years ago, I was blessed with the spiritual friendship of Sri Saamavedam Shanmukha Sarma. He is about the age of my son but he is more of a spiritual guru to me, just like to all you readers. When I first met him and heard his wish, given both of our financial limitations, I wasn’t so sure how we could record and publish these songs and told him the same. He assured me, “Lord Shiva will show us a way”.
When I read those lyrics, its influence on me was imminent for each of his lyrics would reflect the depths of his emotions and devotion, heights of his spiritual intellect and breadth of his knowledge about our veda-shastra-purana-itihasas. But given the frequent traveling nature of my job with back to back concerts and recordings, I did not get to work on those lyrics right away. Time flew. A few years later, he paid me another visit and presented me the anthology of 100 of his lyrics printed as “SivaPadam” and he told me that out of friendship and mutual respect, Sri SP Balasubrahmanyam and Smt. SP Sailaja have recorded one album in their voice. But he reminded me his lifelong desire – to hear his lyrics set to music by me and recorded in my own voice. He said he would give me complete freedom on how I would set tunes to his songs.
First song of his that I set music to was “Sivaa aninanthane” in Shivaranjani ragam. During his subsequent visit to Tirupati, at our home, I wanted to sing him the newly composed tunes. “Shivaaaa…. “, thus started the first song in my voice. A transcendental bliss followed. With tears in my eyes, my voice choked. He treasured even those emotional moments and waited patiently to hear the rest. In a few months, we did our first Shiva Padam concert at Ravindra Bharathi in Hyderabad to a packed house. And soon the first album was released.
You all know him, as much as I do, as an influential and inspirational speaker, spiritual guru, philanthropist and I need not talk about those dimensions, more so given the space-time constraints. I only wanted to use this opportunity to walk down the memory lane and to highlight Sri Saamavedam Shanmukha Sarma as a blessed lyricist and how our journey together started in service of Lord Shiva.
On many occasions, he said on stage during our SivaPadam concerts, “I feel I am more fortunate than Annamacharya to have heard my own songs set to tune and presented by Sri Garimella Blakrishna Prasad garu”. I feel truly blessed for such high regards he has for me and my music. There are many lyricists who can write songs by composing beautiful words of praise on deities. But Sri Saamavedam Shanmukha Sarma belongs to an elite list of lyricist whose each song is a treasure trove of wisdom reflecting the essence of vedas, lessons from devotion, secrets of spirituality and a wealth of knowledge for generations to come. Though I like each of his songs in their own way, songs like “Sivaa Aninanthane”, “Namassivaya Nateshwaraya”, “Maayavala Visarithivi”, “Okaanoka Dhavalampu”, which can be enjoyed in a transcendental blissful state, take a special place in my heart.
So far, I have composed music for about 100 songs from SivaPadam of which about 80 have been recorded and released as 8 CD albums, with 9th album currently underway and 10th album already planned. He also blessed my son Chi. Anilakumar and students Smt. NC Sridevi and R Bullemma with opportunities to sing and record some of his songs. I am indebted to him beyond words.
